Curious By Nature and A Communicator By Profession.
I've enjoyed a career that includes writing and editing for trade publications in the transportation industry, and for newspapers like the Houston Business Journal. Science, technology and understanding how things work have always been interests of mine. I've worked inside Texas Instruments in public relations and marketing communications, and provided communications counsel to executives at other Fortune 500 giants such as Microsoft, Intel and Sony. I helped manage public relations firms and marketing agencies before I co-founded and ran one of my own that we grew into a 25-person organization. Business travels to China, Japan, Germany, the UK, Canada, the Baltic region and Scandinavia shape the world view I bring to my clients.
Seeing the Forest for the Trees.
My passion for the outdoors and the environment began as a boy exploring the woods and creeks of Northeast Ohio. It was kindled by the enthusiasm of an Earth Sciences teacher in middle school who spoke with so much passion about why Earth Day was happening. I earned a degree in journalism with a concentration in science writing from The Ohio State University. Since then I've enjoyed exploring and explaining how things work for successful businesses, and how they bring positive change to people's lives. During the past several years, I've increasingly focused my communications skills on the environment by getting directly involved in various sustainability-related organizations. As marketing director for the Oregon Environmental Council, I provided public relations and marketing counsel to multiple OEC initiatives, including the Eco-Healthy Childcare program, which received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Children’s Environmental Health Excellence Award. While a member of steering committee of the Clean Technology Alliance, a special interest group of the Software Association of Oregon, I led the group through a positioning and branding process that helped showcase regional breakthroughs in clean hardware and software technology.
Accelerating the Change.
As a member of the management team of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, which works to make sustainability standard practice, I've shaped and driven on-line communications and negotiated partnerships with other like-minded organizations around the world. My interest in sustainability led me to The Bainbridge Graduate Institute, which is ranked among the top five sustainable business schools in the US by The Huffington Post. I completed a certificate in Sustainable Business Management at BGI and co-founded a sustainable business consultancy called Kalpa Consulting with fellow BGI classmates. Working with Kalpa helps keep me current with the rapidly evolving trends in the field of sustainability. This informs the work I do for my clients.
The Road Ahead.
It's been a great adventure, and I look forward to working with more exceptional people to help move their visions ahead. Contact me if you're looking for first class communications counsel with a minimum of hassle.
